Trauma and PTSD
Trauma-focused therapy
Trauma is not only what happened. It is what the nervous system learned from it, and how that learning keeps firing long after the danger has passed.
What it can look like
- Intrusive memories, flashbacks or nightmares
- Avoiding reminders of what happened
- Feeling constantly on edge, or startling easily
- Numbness, or feeling detached from yourself
- Disturbed sleep and difficulty trusting people
What therapy does about it
Trauma-focused therapy is deliberate and paced. A psychologist will usually spend time on stability and coping before approaching the memory itself, and will not push faster than you can tolerate. Several practitioners on Serenica have specific trauma training.
