Depression
Therapy for depression and low mood
Depression is not only sadness. For many people it is flatness — losing interest in things that used to matter, finding ordinary tasks heavy, and pulling away from people without quite deciding to.
What it can look like
- Low mood most of the day, most days
- Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities
- Fatigue, or sleeping much more or much less than usual
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Feelings of worthlessness, guilt or hopelessness
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
What therapy does about it
Talking therapies work well for depression, particularly CBT and behavioural activation, which rebuilds activity and connection before motivation returns rather than waiting for it. Where depression is severe, a psychologist can also advise on when medical input is worth considering.
